Vinhas do Farrobo - Bastardo 2022

The Bastardo grape variety (Trousseau) was practically extinct in Madeira for several decades. Its recovery is credited to Teófilo Cunha and his family, who planted new vineyards on their land in the Farrobo area, in São Jorge on the north coast of the island. To make this wine, Ricardo Diogo and Mariana Salvador selected 800 kilograms of the best grapes from this vineyard, from which they conducted maceration for 11 days, with whole clusters and berries. Fermentation was completed in two French oak barrels, one of 225 liters and the other of 400 liters. It aged there for 13 months until bottling in October 2023. A total of 482 units were bottled.

With a slightly reddish color, this claret-style Bastardo presents itself delicately and freshly on the nose with aromas of cherry, sour cherry, wild herbs, and a hint of strawberry jelly. Light but quite substantial on the palate with pronounced tannins, fine and fresh acidity, leading to a dry and persistent finish. Excellent with game meats and barbecue.
